Sun, sea and sand. To me, this is happiness. For the perfect winter escape, Sammy and I took off to (25°C and sunny) Sydney. First stop, Bondi.
Bondi Beach is simply magical. I never get tired of catching that first glimpse of ocean from high on Campbell Parade. Bondi is best explored by foot, and the Icebergs make for a great starting point. I’d happily swap my Windsor apartment for one of those white-washed beach houses, any takers? Imagine waking up with Bondi Beach right on your doorstep.
As we headed along the iconic boardwalk towards North Bondi, I couldn’t help stopping to admire all the colourful street art. I love illustrator and blogger Jasmine Dowling’s new addition, with her ‘wish you were here’ spin on a Bondi postcard.
Luckily for Sammy and I, newly renovated Bondi eatery Porch and Parlour had opened up again that very day. No poached eggs on toast here, instead you’ll find superfood brekkie bowls full of kale and quinoa topped with soft-boiled eggs rolled in herbs and sea salt. We added an all important side of bacon. The apple, pineapple and mint smoothie brought us straight back to Summer.
Guess where we ate two mornings in a row…
Save the sleep-ins for another weekend and hit the beach early if you can. Ok, really, really early. By 8.30am on a Sunday morning (we were pretty proud of our effort) there was already a substantial crowd of hungry locals waiting for a table outside Porch.
I recommend exploring the little boutiques at the back of Bondi then joining the Sydneysiders and their dogs on the hill next to the skate park. I could spend all afternoon relaxing here on the grass with the weekend papers, soaking up the sun. It’s also a great spot for people watching: tourists with their selfie-sticks, the surfers waiting for the perfect wave, the odd seagull fighting over a hot chip.
IT’S ALSO A GREAT SPOT FOR PEOPLE WATCHING: TOURISTS WITH THEIR SELFIE-STICKS, THE SURFERS WAITING FOR THE PERFECT WAVE, THE ODD SEAGULL FIGHTING OVER A HOT CHIP.
When you’re ready for coffee round II, head back up to the Icebergs’ Terrace Cafe, on the balcony behind their infamous Dining Room and Bar. Goodbye for now Bondi, it’s time to burn off that extra bacon with a coastal walk to Bronte.
