Ah, Santorini. Pure. Magic. Time just seems to stand still, and I’m seriously lost for words to describe the incredible view in front of me. The horizon blends seamlessly into the sea, an infinity of blue. And the light! That incandescent golden hue that lights up the island and rains down on the white washed, sugar-cube houses. Have you ever reached a destination you loved so much you were seriously tempted to defer the rest of your trip? That’s Santorini. I could definitely get used to life on this little island…
With myriad accomodation choices stretching along the volcanic coastline, we chose luxury boutique hotel Aenaon Villas on the northern part of the island. As part of the Mr & Mrs Smith Portfolio, there was no doubt this hotel would be special, but what we didn’t anticipate was the level of detail and the kindness of the staff that was second to none. A boutique property with just seven suites, we barely saw another guest during our entire stay. Relaxed is an understatement. Mornings were spent in our bathers, eating a locally sourced breakfast of freshly squeezed orange juice, summer fruits, poached eggs, coffee and the highlight – chocolate soufflé. How could we say no? Relaxing back into our chairs with panoramic views of Aegean Sea and the volcano’s famous caldera, listening to the soft fall of the infinity pool and watching the boats sailing past – pure happiness.
Settling into island time, we were happy to spend most of our days soaking up the Santorini sun, rosé in hand, by the pool. Although, I would recommend spending a morning wandering through Imerovgli for those postcard views dotted with church bells and those unmistakable blue domes. Nights were spent exploring Oia, where we stumbled across the cutest little book store called Atlantis. For unsurpassed views of the sunset (without all the crowds) walk down the cobbled ‘donkey track’ to Ammouldi Bay and watch the sun slowly set over the port as you tuck into freshly caught octopus and sea bass at one of the authentic Greek taverns. Lolita has hands down the best gelato in town, and is the perfect pit-stop for late night dessert. Lemon and pistachio are always my favourites.
Back at Aenaon Villas, looking up at the clear night sky full of stars, there really is no place I’d rather be.
